Henry Hastings Sibley is known as one of Minnesota’s Founding Fathers. He was a national politician, a founder of the Minnesota Territory, leading architect of its constitution and the first governor of Minnesota. Some view Sibley as a cultural leader who bridged Dakota and European American cultures. However, Sibley is also known for his role in controversial treaty negotiations, as well as in battles and trials against the Dakota, the exile of Dakota people, and punitive expeditions against them after the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. This guided experience explores the complicated and controversial life and career of Henry Hastings Sibley.
