Directions

Sections of MN Hwy 5 near Historic Fort Snelling will be closed during the 2016 summer season. Please check the MN Dept. of Transportation for updates and follow detours:

Detour: Visitors from St. Paul should follow the detour on Hwy 5 to Post Road exit (past MSP airport). Turn left and go over the highway, take Hwy 5 back towards St. Paul and merge onto Hwy 55 west. Immediately take Bloomington Road exit to Historic Fort Snelling.

At the junction of Minnesota Highways 5 and 55, one mile east of the Twin Cities International Airport. Take Bloomington Road exit and follow signs to historic site.

*REMEMBER: Look for signs that say "Fort Snelling Historic Site" not "Fort Snelling State Park"

Public Transportation

Via Bus:

Bus lines numbers 55, 155, 442 and 471 serve Fort Snelling from Minneapolis. Service from St. Paul requires a transfer at the Lake Street Station. the Fort Snelling Bus Stop is located adjacent to the Bishop Whipple Federal Building parking lots, and is a 10-15 minute walk from the Historic Fort Snelling Visitor Center. Via Light Rail:

The Hiawatha Line Fort Snelling Light Rail Station and the Fort Snelling Bus Stop is located adjacent to the Bishop Whipple Federal Building parking lots, and is a 10-15 minute walk from the Historic Fort Snelling Visitor Center.

CAUTION: Please note when walking to the historic fort from the Light Rail station several areas do not have sidewalks. In addition, there are blind corners and fast-moving traffic, particularly along Bloomington Road. Please exercise extreme caution when walking in this area.
