Early American Skills Classes

Blacksmith Shop

For those interested in trying their hand at learning a skill from the early 1800s, Historic Fort Snelling offers Early American Skills Classes.

Pre-registration and pre-payment for these programs is required. Participants ages 13-17 must be accompanied throughout the program by a responsible adult. Click the dates below to sign up!

  • Blacksmithing I
    June 15
    Sept. 14

    11 am - 2 pm

Join the skilled craftsmen to try your hand at basic blacksmithing skills. After a brief orientation, use period tools to learn long-forgotten skills. Participants will work the forge, pound out the hot metal, and shape the iron using hammer and tongs as it was done 200 years ago.  Bring your completed project home to impress family and friends with your new smithing skills!

  • Blacksmithing II
    June 29
    Sept. 28

    11 am - 2 pm

Individuals who have already participated in the Blacksmithing I program are encouraged to join the skilled trades people of Historic Fort Snelling and further sharpen their blacksmithing skills.  Students will work on an advanced smithing project – making a real working knife.
