The tour takes groups to eight different stations where they will meet costumed historical interpreters that will share the stories of the many different people who called Fort Snelling home.

Front Gate

Welcome to Historic Fort Snelling! Every tour starts at the front gate where staff greet tour groups and prepare them for their exploration of the historic site and its rich history.

Fort Snelling had the first schoolhouse in Minnesota. A costumed interpreter leads students through an interactive presentation comparing school in the early 1800s with their classrooms today.

Married Quarters

It took lots of people to make a fort work! Students will learn about the important roles women played at the fort, especially the laundresses who kept the soldiers’ clothing clean and mended.

Indian Agency

Inside Minnesota's oldest house, students meet a costumed interpreter who engages them in comparing and contrasting life in Minnesota in the early 1800s with today.

Parade Ground

Students practice early 19th century military drill with an interpreter dressed as an 1820s U.S. soldier. Students also see a demonstration of how to load and fire a real flintlock musket.
